Los Angeles Non-Profit Wins Oprah's
Angel Network "Use Your Life Award"
Los Angeles, Calif., May 28, 2002
Camp Harmony Receives $100,000 Gift on "The Oprah Winfrey Show"
Oprah Winfrey recognized Los Angeles-based non-profit Camp Harmony with a $100,000 "Use Your Life Award" on "The Oprah Winfrey Show." The "Use Your Life Award" is a $100,000 donation from Oprah's Angel Network, which is funded by viewer donations and Jeff Bezos of Amazon.com. In addition, Lands' End surprised Camp Harmony with a gift of "Clothes for a Year" for 200 boys and girls, which includes such items as t-shirts, pants, bathing suits, shoes, a sleeping bag, backpack, and a beach towel.
Oprah's Angel Network established the "Use Your Life Award" in April 2000 and since then has awarded it to individuals who, through their charitable organizations, are making a difference in the lives of others.
"We are so excited to receive this award," said Robin Segal, Camp Harmony's founder and executive director. "Camp Harmony relies on the generosity and kindness of others, and these gifts from Oprah's Angel Network and Lands' End will bring smiles to hundreds of homeless and near homeless children from Los Angeles who visit Camp Harmony this year."
Camp Harmony provides a week's camping experience for up to 160 homeless and near homeless children each August. Camp Harmony serves children who live in shelters, transitional housing, or in overcrowded and deteriorating housing in downtown Los Angeles, Pico-Union, and the San Fernando Valley. The purpose of Camp Harmony is to give these children an opportunity to "just have fun" utilizing programs based in sports, arts and literacy that encourage them to stay in school.
Camp Harmony will use this donation to add a second session in 2003 so more children can participate in the Camp Harmony program. In addition, this donation will be used to purchase much needed supplies for the camp and to purchase computer equipment for the kids to use.
Camp Harmony is one of several programs run by United in Harmony, a Los Angeles-based 501 (c) 3 organization. United in Harmony's mission is to provide homeless children with hope and opportunities to develop positive self-esteem through interactions with teenage and adult role models.
In addition to Camp Harmony, United in Harmony offers the Harmony Sports Clinic, often the first opportunity for homeless children to be coached in a variety of sports, and the Harmony Holiday Party, an annual event that gives homeless children access to the love and attention that is so needed during the holidays.
Camp Harmony accepts financial contributions, as well as donations of new supplies, such as clothing, shoes, blankets, pillows, bathing suits, arts and crafts supplies, sports equipment, toiletries, and towels.
